Budapest food guide: Best places to eat and drink in Budapest

Budapest is one of my favourite European capitals. With its quirky character, beautiful Art Deco architecture and charming streets, it’s a city that has always held a special place in my heart. I first visited as a teenager and was completely charmed by its picturesque scenery, so I was keen to return and explore more of what this incredible city has to offer.

One of the highlights of any trip is discovering the local food scene, and Budapest certainly doesn’t disappoint!

What to expect from the Budapest food scene

Traditional Hungarian food is rich, hearty and full of flavour. Think paprika, comforting stews and delicious street food. Some of the most famous Hungarian dishes include goulash, lángos (deep-fried flatbread) and chimney cake, all of which are worth trying during your visit.

But Budapest’s food scene offers much more than traditional Hungarian cuisine. Whether you’re looking for coffee in the morning, street food for lunch or dinner and drinks in the evening, here are my recommendations for the best places to eat and drink in Budapest, based on my own visit.

1. Tilos a Tilos Culture Bar

Tilos a Tilos Culture Bar is a great spot in central Budapest. Located in a beautiful square, it has a homely, casual atmosphere that makes it a lovely place to stop for a relaxed meal. We sat inside during our visit, so unfortunately, we didn’t get much of a chance to enjoy the outdoor setting.

I tried the goulash, one of Hungary’s most iconic dishes, and it was hot, rich and bursting with flavour. It was the perfect introduction to traditional Hungarian cuisine and exactly the kind of comforting meal you want when exploring Budapest.

If you’re looking for an informal place to try Hungarian food in Budapest, this is one to consider.

2. Tuning Burgers at Time Out Market Budapest

Time Out Markets are my unhealthy addiction! I seem to find one in almost every city I visit that has one, so when I discovered there was a Time Out Market in Budapest, I knew I had to go.

Bringing together some of the city’s food, drink and cultural experiences, Time Out Market Budapest is a lively destination for anyone wanting to explore the local food scene. With multiple kitchens, bars and event spaces, there’s plenty of choice under one roof.

I decided to try a burger from Tuning Burgers, known for its premium burgers. It was incredibly juicy and packed with flavour. In fact, it could almost rival the delicious burger I had in Barcelona!

If you’re searching for the best burgers in Budapest, Tuning Burgers is well worth adding to your food itinerary.

3. Street Food Karaván Budapest

If you’re looking for Budapest street food, make sure you check out Street Food Karaván.

Visiting Karaván feels like joining a big party. This lively outdoor food market brings together a variety of street food stalls, making it a great place to grab a casual bite while soaking up Budapest’s energetic atmosphere.

Be prepared, though: it gets incredibly busy, and finding a seat can be tricky, particularly at peak times.

I tried traditional Hungarian food from Pulika, which was delicious. With its relaxed atmosphere and range of food options, Karaván is a great stop for lunch or an informal dinner. It is a fun addition to any Budapest food guide.

Address: Budapest, Kazinczy u. 18, 1075 Hungary

4. Bagel + Coffee by Gutenberg

Sometimes, all you need is a good coffee and a cosy spot to start the day. Bagel + Coffee by Gutenberg was one of my favourite little discoveries in Budapest.

This cosy café and bakery is one of those small coffee spots that captures the charm of the city’s side streets. I loved its relaxed Budapest vibe, making it an ideal place to stop for a quick breakfast or enjoy a leisurely coffee with friends.

If you’re looking for speciality coffee, a casual breakfast or a little break from sightseeing, add this café to your Budapest itinerary.

Address: Békési u. 2, District VIII

Opening hours: Monday–Sunday: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM

5. Rojt és Bojt Coffee

Finding a peaceful coffee or lunch spot in Budapest’s Castle District can be tricky, especially when you’re busy exploring the area’s historic streets and landmarks.

Rojt és Bojt Coffee offers a welcome change of pace. Head down the granite stairs and you’ll discover a peaceful, green haven away from the busier tourist areas.

I stopped here for a chocolate muffin as a quick pick-me-up in the middle of the day. If you’re exploring Buda Castle and the surrounding area, this is a lovely café to keep in mind for a coffee break or a light bite.

6. Szimpla Kert: Budapest’s famous ruin bar

Okay, so Szimpla Kert isn’t strictly a food recommendation, but did you really think I was going to leave Budapest’s most famous ruin bar off a list of places to eat and drink?

Budapest’s ruin bars are an essential part of the city’s nightlife, and Szimpla Kert is arguably the best-known example. It’s a must-visit if you want to experience Budapest after dark.

The history of the ruin bars is fascinating. In the early 2000s, enterprising locals began to see the potential in the derelict courtyards and neglected buildings of Budapest’s historic Jewish Quarter. Former factories, apartment buildings and other abandoned spaces were transformed into vibrant social venues filled with eclectic décor, mismatched furniture, art and music.

Today, these quirky bars are part of what makes Budapest so distinctive.

Szimpla Kert is worth visiting for its unique atmosphere, unusual interiors and lively nightlife. Even if you’re not planning a big night out, it’s a memorable place to stop for a drink and experience a different side of the city.

Address: Kazinczy u. 14, 1075 Hungary
