Eating my way through Belgium: fries, chocolate, and delicious Belgian food
Belgium is known for three things: beer, fries, and chocolate. While beer isn’t really my thing, fries and chocolate definitely are, which is exactly why Belgium seemed like the ideal place for a trip.
Would you like a few ideas about where to eat in Belgium? Here is my round up of a few places I visited for Belgian food during my trip:
Bruges
De Republik
Our first day happened to coincide with the Bruges Marathon. This was good as it meant that we could enjoy the atmosphere, but it also meant that everywhere was busy and getting breakfast or lunch was really difficult. However, we were happy to stumble upon De Republik, Bruges version of a Grand Cafe. This place worked out well as it was fairly quiet went we went in and we could easily get a seat.
The pasta was delicious and there was an arty alternative vibe. This place was obviously designed to cater for the Bruges hipster, but is an ideal choice for visitors to Bruges as well.

The Potato Bar
Because we ate quite a lot for brunch we wanted something a bit smaller. We tried this place because it seemed quirky. The fries were fantastic but The Potato Bar also offered a good choice of snacks.
I went for the Sunny- Side Up Egg fries which were quirky and actually worked as a dish. This is definitely somewhere worth checking out if you’re in Bruges.

Tattie’s
This is a super cosy little cafe, with a great Autumn ambience. I loved their Carbonara- there was piles and piles of cheese! The service was good as well. I would definitely recommend here if you want a good place for breakfast or lunch in Bruges.

Brasserie de Schilder
This restaurant was across the street from our hotel, which meant that we had to give this a try. Brasserie de Schilder offers great Belgian food in an upmarket atmosphere. I had the Flemish stew which was tasty. The restaurant had a cosy interior and I enjoyed eating my meal overlooking the square.

Brussels
CASCO
This a casual and laid back bar and restaurant, well- located in the centre of Brussels. I really enjoyed my lunch (a chicken wrap) and I felt that the location was good too. Great for a relaxed lunch in Brussels.

Ghent
Le Pain Quotidien
I loved the waffles here- they were delicious and so chocolatey. I didn’t realise Pain de Quotien is actually Belgian- it was nice to visit one and sample Belgian food whilst in Belgium! It was in an interesting location, looking out over the square and meant that we could enjoy the ambience whilst we enjoyed our food.
Recommended if you want to do something very Belgian in Ghent.

The Meat Factory
The Meat Factory was a bit of a job to find but- this place was responsible for my favourite meal that I ate in Belgium. I could wax lyrical about how amazing the food is. I had the chicken and it was perfectly cooked. The service was good too, with a peaceful but thriving ambience. We were seated swiftly despite not having a booking. Their desserts were also top-notch. Highly recommended and I would definitely go back.

Honestly, I think I came back from Belgium carrying a few extra pounds- but who could say no when the food was that good?
