Stockholm Food Adventures

Eating out in Sweden is not cheap. In fact, I felt it was one of the most expensive countries I had visited. But despite the price tag, there were plenty of delicious, unique, and memorable Stockholm food moments that made it worthwhile.

Here’s a rundown of some of the places we tried in Stockholm. I have also added in Uppsala, and Vaxholm- an eclectic mix.

Stockholm

Enoteca and Cucina Italiana

We popped into this place on a whim and were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the beef risotto- something a little different- and it was absolutely delicious. The location is great too, right by the water, which made for a lovely setting.

La Neta

A laid-back spot for casual Mexican street food. There was a screamy guy behind the counter who seemed to be shouting (at staff or customers- unclear), but y’know the food made up for the chaotic vibe. Best of all? It was actually pretty cheap- which is a good find in Sweden.

Stockholm City Food Hall

I love a good food hall and this one was a hidden gem. I tried Tellus Worldwide Kebab. It was a little hard to navigate the menu at first but I finally managed to order food. I really enjoyed this and liked the lowkey Stockholm vibe.

Meatballs For The People

Could you find cheaper or even tastier meatballs elsewhere in Stockholm? Probably. But this place offers a wide variety, and the downtown vibe adds to the experience. Expect a wait for a table, but in my opinion, it’s worth it.

Fabrique Klarasbergsgatan 60

A charming and cosy bakery located on Klarabergsgatan in the district of Norrmalm. A cute, instagrammable interior with good coffee and freshly baked buns.

Espresso House

Espresso House is the largest coffeee house in the Nordic region. There seemed to one of these in every direction we looked in Stockholm! We found these to be ideal to grab a quick breakfast in the morning. While it’s a chain, the cosy interiors and reliable options gave me a surprisingly local, Nordic feel.

Karamellan at Drottiningholm Palace

There has been a Swiss-style café at Drottningholm Palace since the latter half of the 19th century. Karamellan has been serving classic Swedish cuisine and fika since the 19th century. After exploring the Palace, we chose to take part in the Swedish tradition of fika (coffee and cake) and relax in the beautiful grounds.

Uppsala

Domtrappkallaren

If you’re visiting Stockholm, the University city of Uppsala is perfect for a day trip. I was looking for something that served meatballs (yeah, I know). Domtrappkallaren felt very traditional and authentic, though the service was on the slower side. Despite that, the ambience made it a nice stop.

Vaxholm

Winsberg bar

Vaxholm is an idyllic island town and the capital of the Stockholm archipelegos. We chose Winsberg Bar for its inviting outdoor seating. I had a burger, which was decent, but the cocktails? Incredible. Honestly, I’m not sure if the food stood out because the drinks stole the show.

A special shout out to this lovely cinnamon bun I had in the cafe whilst visiting the Vasa Museum. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Vasa Museum- the museum displays the only almost fully intact 17th-century ship that has ever been salvaged, the 64-gun warship Vasa that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628.

While Sweden may not be the place for budget dining, the quality of food, beautiful settings, and variety of experiences made each meal memorable. From royal palace cafés to trendy meatball joints and hidden food halls, there’s something here for every kind of traveller- with a little flexibility (and maybe some extra room in the budget).
