Eating My Way Through London: Figo, Stratford

This pizza from Figo in Stratford deserves a lot of love. I tried it way back before lockdown 1, so it was a bit of time ago, but it’s stuck in my memory since. Figo is a great little Italian place in East London, with a vibrant atmosphere. The pizza was excellent, so flavoursome and filling. The restaurant is popular with the nearby office- workers, therefore hopefully it hasn’t suffered too much as a larger number of people work from home. I think I’ll give Figo 9/10 for its pizza.

    Sushi-making and Sake*

Happy October! The trees are changing colour and there’s a definite chill in the air. I love Autumn- it makes me want to stack up on carbs and chai. I’ve also been thinking back to a sushi-making class I went to in London this time last year. I’ve been a bit lax in adding this to the blog because of everything happening with the pandemic, but have finally got around to posting it. When my friend, Jo, asked me to accompany her on a sushi-making course, I readily accepted. The chance to learn a new skill, plus the opportunity for food totally sold this to me. Our teacher, Makiko Sano,…

    Eggs Benedict at Okka

Brunch is back on the menu…at 3pm! Visiting Okka, a cafe which specialises in Turkish and Mediterranean cusine, was a relaxing way to spend a Friday off work. Fuss- free and home-cooked (apparently). Okka Cafe and Restaurant, Harpenden

    Lotus Biscoff Cheesecake

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the ideal dessert- the Lotus Biscoff Cheesecake! Perfect for finishing off a meal (or starting one tbh), the Lotus biscuits have a crunchy, caramelised taste which goes well with a creamy cheesecake. And I love cheesecake! The Three Windmills, Newbury

    Soft-baked Pretzels

Okay not going to lie, I’ve never really given much thought to pretzels. I predominantly thought they were a savoury snack. So when I received my latest baking box from BakedIn, I was intrigued to find that this month’s bake was going to be soft-baked pretzels. Not only that, but these were sweet, covered in cinnamon and designed to be dipped into melted chocolate. Pretzels were so fun to make- I would never have baked something like this usually, but they were easier than I thought they would be. I ate mine fresh out of the oven- they were delicious and made me feel like I was in continental Europe…

    Carrot Cake Whoopie Pies

Have you ever tried Whoopie Pies? I hadn’t either, before yesterday. And now I wonder where they’ve been all my life! As part of a bank holiday weekend project, I made these carrot cake whoopie pies to enjoy. They were so much fun to make- essentially, they’re two biscuits sandwiched together and filled with buttercream icing. I’ll let you into a little secret- the recipe and ingredients for this bake were supplied by BakedIn Baking Club. They kindly let me try out a box at a discounted price. And I loved it, so much that I think I’ll sign up to the subscription. The BakedIn Baking Club send out a…

    Simply scrumptious scones

I absolutely love afternoon tea (as anyone who follows this blog will know). And what is no afternoon tea complete without? Scones! Now, I feel that scones are one of those foods that everyone has their own recipe for- however there seems to be a huge amount of variations online. Therefore, you need to try a few to find the perfect one. I tried out Mary Berry’s afternoon tea recipe for VE Day. These scones were the perfect way to celebrate the occasion and required a smaller amount of each ingredient- ideal if you’re having trouble getting flour. Ingredients 250g/9oz self-raising flour 1 rounded tsp baking powder 40g/1½oz softened butter…

    Going bananas for banana bread

The accepted wisdom is that if you haven’t baked banana bread whilst being in lockdown, are you even doing it right? But it’s not surprising that banana bread has been so popular whilst quarantining- it is utterly delicious, the natural sweetness of the fruit lending itself perfectly to baking. I tried out this recipe from BBC Good Food at the weekend. It was moist with a lovely flavour of banana- perfect with a cup of tea. Recipe can be found at BBC Good Food Ingredients Recipe
