My favourite books of 2024
At the start of each year, I enjoy reflecting on the books I read in the previous year. In 2024, I managed to read 42 books, including 12 for my book club. I also found myself diving into more non-fiction than usual, thanks to the convenience of audiobooks!
Below is a roundup of my favourite books of 2024—have you read any of these?
In Memoriam by Alice Winn
In Memoriam is probably my favourite 5 star read of the year. It follows the journey of two young men, Gaunt and Ellwood, from an idyllic English boarding school to the trenches of World War One and features some beautiful prose. Read my review here.
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jeannette McCurdy
I picked up (or listened) to this book mainly because I saw it everywhere. In this book, Jeannette McCurdy details her struggles as a former child actor and her enmeshed relationship with her abusive mother. I listened to the audiobook which made the book more poignant for me.
Homecoming by Kate Morton
I’m a huge fan of Kate Morton’s books. I read this one back in January 2024. It is a captivating novel that needs to be read slowly. The book has a true-crime vibe which worked really well with the family dynamics. It also includes a meta-fiction element which I enjoyed.
The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell
The book was a tough one for me as I began reading it after finishing In Memoriam and thought nothing would match that. However I really enjoyed The Marriage Portrait and it is now one of my favourite books of 2024. It examines the real-life historical behind Robert Browning’s poem My Last Duchess and rewrites the story from a modern perspective. I haven’t read anything else by Maggie O’ Farrell, but after finishing this book, I’m keen to try some of her other work.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Another stand-out book for me was Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Fourth Wing is a high fantasy novel that follows a cadet named Violet Sorrengail as she braves Basgiath War College, where the only goal is to bond with a dragon or die trying.
This book did a great job of getting me back into reading the fantasy genre. I enjoyed the combination of dragons, academia and cliff-hangers. I also liked the romance aspect, which is very rare for me.
